Whiskers
In case of tin-plated surfaces, tensions can lead to hair-like crystals being formed on the surface.
Tin and tin lead 95/5
For top quality soldering and, as pure tin, naturally compliant with RoHs and WEEE.
Nickel
Nickel used as a protection against thermal stresses of up to 400 °C and against corrosive evaporation of plastics.

Barrier Layer

Nickel barrier layer

In tin-plating of copper wires and strips, nickel is used as a barrier layer (diffusion barrier) to prevent whiskers. This intermediate layer prevents intermetallic phases, which cause whisker formation, being formed on the copper-tin interface. A silver barrier could also be used, but would be more costly.
